CHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF CONE AND WOOD OF PINUS PINEA

Abstract


Cell-wall components and solubility characteristics of Pinus pinea cone and wood from three different regions of Turkey were investigated. The ash content of cones was higher than that of woods, nearing to the ash value of softwood’s bark. Total extractives by successive extractions amounted approximately 23-30% of cones. Both of cone and wood have almost equal amount of holocellulose however; the alpha-cellulose content was higher in the pinea-wood samples. The cones have higher acid-soluble lignin than the wood but Klason lignin amount in cones after 1% NaOH-extraction was lower than wood. Except Coruh region the chemical analysis of cones from other regions gave almost same results, whereas these values in the woods exhibited only small differences.
